About DCF

EST. 1988

Darn Cheap Fabrics (DCF) is an Australian fabric and haberdashery treasure trove, family owned and operated since its conception in 1988. Since then, DCF has been providing quality products to all levels of sewing enthusiasts, all around Australia.

DCF draws on our fostered relationships with designers and manufacturers in the international fashion industry, allowing us to bring you the latest trends in colour, print, fabrication and style, at the best possible price. Our fabrics and trims are deeply loved by a host of Australian designer clothing labels.

We have been in business for almost 40 years, and we have no plans in slowing down now. With our 2 store locations in Melbourne, and our growing online store, we’re always excited to meet new customers, watch new businesses grow, and see young creators flourish.

Our History

DCF began in fabric design, development and wholesale to Australian businesses. We quickly recognised the excess stock that came from that part of the business, and so, we decided to sell our stock to the public, at next to wholesale prices. Our retail business started from humble beginnings in a small shopfront in Highett, and a stall at the Dandenong Market, before opening our flagship store in Glen Huntly a few years later. 

We have endured many obstacles in our years, such as the decline of textile manufacturing in Australia, to keeping our doors open during lockdown. We believe it’s important for creators to have access to quality fabrics to keep the trade alive. We are determined to keep prices affordable, to encourage experienced and beginner sewers alike, to keep sewing. At our core, we love fashion, and we love seeing what our talented customers can do with our beautiful fabrics.

Our Stores

Glen Huntly

Our doors have been open for over 30 years at our flagship store in Glen Huntly, and we’re not leaving anytime soon! This store sits conveniently on Glen Huntly Road, right next to Glen Huntly train station and #67 tram. There is plenty of street car parking and some gorgeous cafes around to make a day of it.

Fitzroy

We opened our Fitzroy store in July of 2021, and we have loved every moment getting to know our fabulous neighbours and locals. The #86 tram stops 50m from our shop in the bustling heart of Fitzroy, where there are so many exciting places to visit - just make sure you put us on the agenda!

Online

We aim to provide quality products to customers around Australia (and beyond) who aren’t able to visit in-store. We do our best to get products online, and to ensure the images and descriptions give you enough information for a secure online shopping experience.

Our Team

At DCF we are known for our dedicated customer service. Our wonderful staff always do their best to find what you need, lend some advice, or help you solve a sewing problem. We strive to employ fellow sewing experts, to ensure that our customers can come to us for sound advice. Just remember, our advice is only advice, and the ultimate decision is yours.
